Deepening Connections: Shirlee’s Dream
In 2021 I reconnected with an old friend named Shirlee. I hadn’t spoken to her in about 30 years. She was now, 96, bedridden, alert, happy, loving, and kind. During the renewing of our friendship, she commissioned me to make clay figures of her family members. I don't often do commission work; but in this case, I was willing to take it on because of the love and admiration between Shirlee and me. I was inspired by her enthusiasm and dream of leaving behind this message to her family, "I love you – I've noticed you – I know who you are. Remember me."
Here are a few samples of the photos she sent me and the sculptures I made.
The magazine Studio Potter published a story about my experience with Shirlee. Follow this link to learn more.
